Santorini beaches

Although this famous island is not famous for its turquoise beaches, it has some of the rarest volcanic beaches in the world.

After the Minoan eruption, a layer of ash covered the eastern shores of Santorini.

The shores were extended 2 kilometers, creating a huge black sand beach.

This beach is divided into three smaller ones, Perissa, Kamari and Perivolos.

Whether you are looking for secluded beaches with spectacular scenery or family beaches with various sports activities, you will find the whole package here.

The island is famous for its romance but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have beaches with beach bars for wild parties.

The most famous beaches of Santorini are the red beach, the white beach, the monolith and Vlyhada.

Caldera of Santorini

How was the Caldera created?

It is obvious why the caldera is on the list of natural wonders, since it is a unique natural phenomenon that attracts millions of visitors every year.

The Caldera was created by the Minoan eruption, after the retreat of the central land of the island.

It stretches for 30 kilometers and on it have been built cave houses (built into the rocks) and luxury hotels literally on the edge of the cliff.

The most famous settlements located on the edge of the Caldera are Oia, Imerovigli, Fira and Firostefani.

Hiking in the caldera

One of our best experiences on the island was hiking along the caldera.

We walked from Oia to Fira, covering a distance of 10 kilometers, on the most beautiful natural balcony of the Aegean.

If you’re thinking of venturing out, you’ll definitely need a pair of hiking shoes, sunscreen, goggles, and a hat.

Fira

A unique place to take sunset photos are the famous three bells of Fira.

Other notable sights in Fira are the Holy Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the Dominican Nunnery.

There is one of the treasures of Santorini, the museum of prehistoric hunting and the ticket costs only 6 euros, operating every day except Tuesday.

Oia

The church of Nikolaos Nomikos is the most photographed church in Santorini.

It is located in the center of Oia where crowds of people wait to take a photo with the three blue domes.

In the central narrow street of Oia you will also find Platsani church.

From the Caldera of Oia, you will see one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world.

Santorini is the top tourist destination in Greece and you will understand why with a visit to the Venetian castle of Oia.

It is considered one of the most popular places in the world to see the sunset.

Pyrgos

The highest village of Santorini that oversees the island.

This may be the reason why the Venetians, in 1800, chose Pyrgos as the capital of the island.

This medieval village, preserving the characteristics of the Venetian empire and combining the magnificent Cycladic architecture, steals the hearts of those who visit it.

The Tower allows visitors to admire the sunset from its huge balcony, surrounded by the medieval wall.

The castle of Pyrgos is famous as one of the best locations on the island with a panoramic view.

Walk through the narrow streets of the settlement, where you will discover many buildings of Cycladic architecture worth photographing.

Megalochori

In this traditional village of Santorini, you will find many spots to take pictures and admire the sunset.

You can visit the holy temple of Saints Anargyro, the small church of Agia Fotini which is buried in the Theraic earth (white volcanic soil), the bell tower of the Zoodochos source and the river square where you will find beautiful traditional restaurants surrounded by colorful flowers.

Akrotiri

It is popular for the archaeological site (entrance 12 euros) that it has and also for the Akrotiri lighthouse.

It is considered one of the best spots to see the unique sunset of Santorini.

Be careful on the road as there are many places without railings.

Be sure to start your journey at least an hour before sunset to avoid traffic jams. There is free parking near the lighthouse, at least for those who arrive early.

Imerovigli

It is the most luxurious area of Santorini, as it is located at the highest point of the Caldera.

Imerovigli is surrounded by the most luxurious hotels of the island that offer amazing views.

Also, you can take fantastic photos with the sunset in the background, from the famous chapel of Panagia Theoskepastis which is located behind the rock of Skaros.
